AN unlikely pub on a barge in the middle of the UK countryside has been surprising walkers, who were not expecting to find a drink in such a picturesque location.
On a small stretch of canal next to one of Scotland’s most famous natural landmarks is the rare boozer, providing welcome refreshment to weary walkers out enjoying the scenery.

The Eagle Barge Inn sits along the Caledonian Canal between Loch Lochy and Loch Ness.
It’s been described as “surprisingly spacious” inside, while it also has seating outside for a drink amid the attractive natural surroundings.
The converted Dutch barge offers a variety of food and ales, as well as a large selection of whiskies, the perfect tipple on a stroll through the Scottish countryside.
The barge’s website claims that it’s “perfect for walkers, cyclists and boaters alike” and also boasts of a warm fireplace and freshly made food.
The barge itself is enjoying a third life, after it was built in 1926 and used as a troop carrier in World War II before being used to transport sugar beats across the Channel.
It was later decommissioned and taken to Scotland where it was converted into the unique bar and restaurant that it is today, situated at Laggan Locks.
One person who was surprised to find the pub was Instagram user Graeme Johncock (@Scotlands_stories), who shared footage of his visit to the bar.
He captioned his video: “Did you know that you can find a floating pub in Scotland’s Great Glen?
“I stumbled upon the Eagle Barge Inn the other day and knew I had to share it – especially since it’s dog friendly!
“You can find it tucked away on the Caledonian Canal, right next to the northeastern end of Loch Lochy.
“Whether you’re on a boating holiday along the string of lochs, hiking the Great Glen Way or touring about the Highlands, it’s a great wee hidden gem to grab lunch, dinner or a dram.”
One of Graeme’s followers commented: “I love quirky places like this. It looks class! I’ll add it to the list.”
Another said: “This Looks like a very comfy and happy spot, for all.”
A third added: “Wow. What a place. Definitely would love to go.”
The area around the Caledonian Canal where the Eagle is found is a favourite among visitors to the area, particularly with natural sights like Ben Nevis and Loch Ness among its attractions.
The former is the highest mountain in the British Isles and can be seen towering above Loch Lochy, while Loch Ness is arguably Scotland’s most famous lake, known for its mythical Loch Ness monster.
While Nessy is unlikely to make an appearance on a visit to the area, some of its other wildlife may well do.
Included in those creatures are kingfishers, herons and even otters.
Scottish Canals explained: “Rivers and rocky or coastal areas are the otters’ natural habitats, but they can also be spotted hunting their prey in quiet stretches of the canals.”
