The Kiffness drops more burning flag memes [video]

The Kiffness has added fuel to the fire of the burning flag debate on social media following a controversial advert aired by the Democratic Alliance.

Earlier this week, the outspoken musician posted a parody of the political debate.

THE KIFFNESS DROPS ANOTHER BURNING FLAG PARODY

On his X account, The Kiffness has fiercely defended the DA’s burning flag advert, which he believes is a “metaphor” for the current state of the nation.

Amid the backlash,  the eccentric artist claims he was inspired to “come out of parody retirement” with a musical spoof.

Sampling Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning single; The Kiffness released his parody Flag Is Burning with lyrics that reflect the controversial advert.

The video quickly went viral, and the Cape Town muso followed up with another parody “inspired by the faux outrage.”

“I went & meditated & made this. Enjoy”, he captioned a clip of another quirky clip.

The Kiffness also posted a meme of DA leader John Steenhuisen rocking out to his new jam.

SABC SAYS NO TO AIRING AD

In an open letter on Thursday, 9 May, the SABC announced its decision not to air the controversial burning flag advert.

The letter was addressed to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) and was signed by SABC complaints specialist Nyiko Shibambo.

According to the public broadcaster, there were numerous reasons behind their decision, including stating that the burning flag ad “encourages damage of treasured national symbols,” public backlash, and President Ramaphosa’s condemnation.

It read in part: “The SABC has been monitoring the outcry from South Africans of all races condemning the advertisement, which is now in circulation on various media platforms. Likewise, the SABC believes that the ad encourages damage of treasured national symbols.

“The national flag is a national symbol which represents diverse elements of the country and national unity. Additionally, it is expected that the national flag should be accorded dignity and respect. It is not a representation of a political party but the nation at large,”

According to the SABC, DA leader John Steenhuisen will take legal action against their decision.

He tweeted: “In an unprecedented attack on our democracy, deployed ANC cadres at the SABC have banned the DA’s latest advertisement from the air to hide the truth of how the ANC has burnt our country to the ground.

“The DA will fight to the highest court in the land to defend our constitution”.
