The Spanish airport set to be the biggest in Europe ahead of £2billion renovation

AN AIRPORT in Spain has revealed its multi-billion pound renovation project, which aims to see passenger numbers increase by 33 per cent.

According to CAPA – Centre for Aviation Airport Construction Database, Madrid Barajas Airport will have processed 61.3million passengers by the end of 2023 – which would be an increase on 2019 levels.

As the only commercial airport in the city, the refurbishment of Madrid Barajas Airport is needed in a bid to increase passenger levels.

Last month, AENA (the airport management company that owns Madrid Barajas Airport) unveiled its ambitious plans.

Terminals one, two, and three, at Madrid Barajas Airport, will be refurbished as part of the expansion, with the renovation estimated to cost €700million (£607million).

Meanwhile, terminals four and five will also be expanded, with those plans reported to cost €1.7billion (£1.47billion).

It is thought that the combined projects will be the eighth largest of its kind in Europe, at an already existing airport.

The refurbishment has been announced in a bid to increase the airport’s capacity up to 80 million passengers.

Madrid Barajas Airport is the principal hub connecting mainland Europe to Latin America.

Work on the project is slated to begin in 2031, and once it has been completed the airport will be one of the biggest in Europe.

It is not yet known which airlines will operate from the Spanish airport, and when new flights will depart.

While new routes have yet to be announced, with an increase of 20million passengers, there are likely to be new flights to and from the UK.

The construction work is expected to generate around 60,000 jobs in the area.

At present, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is served by 79 airlines, which fly to 180 destinations.

Direct flights already operate from the UK to Madrid from airports like Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Spain isn’t the only country looking to improve its airports either.

Last month, plans were revealed for a new mega airport in Europe, with flights set to launch in 2028.

Poland‘s new mega airport is expected to rival the likes of Heathrow and Dubai thanks to its proposed long-haul flights.

Construction work should begin on Warsaw Solidarity Airport, also known as Central Communication Port, by the end of the year.

Several airports in the UK are looking to relaunch passengers, including Manston Airport, in Kent.
