THE PAD

Four pretty cedar-clad round treehouses, all named after birds, sit nestled in nine acres of woodland that’s just a five-minute drive (or 45-minute hilly walk) from the riverside village of Dittisham.

Light and spacious, you’ll find two en-suite bedrooms with power showers, Nespresso machine, dishwasher and a smart TV.

A wood burner and underfloor heating keeps things cosy, and there’s a view of the stars through a clear domed roof.

On the deck is a wood-fired hot tub, table football, chess, a barbecue and a double hammock to keep the whole family content – as will the fresh bread, wine and snacks in the welcome hamper.

EXPLORE

Try crabbing off the pontoon in Dittisham, before ringing the bell for the ferryman to sail you across the River Dart to Agatha Christie’s grand holiday home, Greenway.

Single ferry tickets cost £3 per adult, £2.50 per child (Greenwayferry.co.uk).

Hidden on a private island, the elegant mansion is packed with mementoes, has stunning estuary views and a cute treasure hunt for kids.

You can even try “clock golf” on the top lawn, then meander through the woodland to the Boathouse, which found fame in Christie’s novel Dead’s Man Folly.

Entry costs £15.40 per adult, £7.70 per child (Nationaltrust.org.uk).

Blackpool Sands is a 15-minute drive away, and well worth it for its golden beach and giant standup paddleboarding.

The super-size boards hold up to six people and cost £55 per hour.

Warm up afterwards in a quirky barrel-shaped sauna, from £15 per person for one hour (Blackpoolsands.co.uk).

Alternatively, hit Pennywell Farm, a 35-minute drive away, for hands-on animal fun.

Entry costs £19.95 per adult, £15.95 per child (Pennywellfarm.co.uk).
