Travel experts from holiday price comparison site, dealchecker crunched the numbers on the price of local booze in a number of cities and concluded this was the cheapest place for beer across the continent.

But the price of beer is by no means all Debrecen has to offer, with a one-of-a-kind UNESCO World Heritage Site right on its doorstep.

The city’s number one attraction on TripAdvisor is Hortobagy National Park, with swathes of five star reviews.

The park, just north of the city centre, consists of a vast area of plains and wetlands and animals including water buffalo, cattle and horses mounted herdsmen called Csikós.

In fact, it is the largest semi-natural grassland in Europe, with a cultural history that goes back more than 4,000 years – leading tourists to nickname it ‘Hungary’s version of the Wild West’.

Remarkably untouched given its proximity to the city, it is also a dark sky reserve.

Visitors can ride in a horse drawn wagon and experience the traditional Hungarian way of life.

One visitor said: “This is a fanatic park. The scenery is beautiful and one-of-a-kind.”

Another added: “It’s like going back in time.”

Debrecen has long been one of Hungary’s richest and most important cities – in the 1700s it was also the country’s largest, although that title is now claimed by Budapest.

Landmarks that people tend to visit in the city include the Great Church, the largest Protestant church in Hungary, with the largest bell and the Derí Museum.

The museum’s most famous exhibit is the Christ-paintings of Mihály Munkácsy.

After exploring the sights, there’s plenty of places to go for a cheap beer, along with traditional Hungarian dishes like goulash, lecksó and chicken paprikash.

Rosie Panter, a travel expert at dealchecker said that as well as finding cheap destinations, saving money on flights and accommodation is the best way to stretch spending money further.

She said: “For many the idea of a cheeky half or three is now limited to special occasions and vacations.

“As such it’s well worth considering holiday destinations where the cost is less prohibitive.

“Just don’t forget to also search out great deals on flights and accommodation so that you have even more spending money to enjoy in destination.”

Debrecen can be reached via direct flights from the UK, for less than £100.

A night in the city for two can be booked from £18.

She also recommends visits to Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, where a beer is £1.60 on average, Faro, Portugal, with £2.18 pints and Zagreb, Croatia, where a pint is around £2.44.
