Tinnie of the Week: King Road Brewing Co’s winter warmer red ale

BEER NAME?

Winter warmer red ale

WHERE’S IT FROM?

King Road Brewing

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

It’s that time of year.

We’ve been hit by non-stop heat in Perth for what seems like an eternity, starting all the way back when we suffered a heatwave in October of all months.

And just in the last week or so, we’ve come around a corner. The nights are getting cooler, the sunrises later and you may have even found yourself cracking out the dressing gown lately.

So what do us beer drinkers do when the weather gets cooler? Why, we adapt the tinnies we drink, of course.

King Road Brewing Co’s aptly named re-release of its winter warmer red ale is a brew for right now. This very minute.

There is a huge amount of malt on the nose, and the tinnie pours a dark red, clear hue.

On the palate, you’ll find that malt creates a subtle caramel sweetness while also giving the tinnie some toasted grain notes. There’s even the slightest hint of vanilla lingering in the background.

It’s not particularly bitter. It’s well-rounded, well-balanced and very smooth on the palate.

The light-touch East Kent Golding hops are used in the brewing process and with a 4.7 per cent ABV, it’ll keep you warm without getting you toasted.

SHOULD I SHARE IT?

It’s the sort of tinnie you could easily drink around a fire pit, like the one on the can, rugged up against the cold while chatting to your mates. Right now, as the seasons are changing.

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?

$21 for a four-pack.

RATING?

4 toasty campfires out of 5
