Title race intensifies in Zain Premier League

Al-Arabi player Sultan Al-Enezi tries to stop the run of Kuwait striker Youssef Nasser.

KUWAIT CITY, May 4: The top positions remained unchanged in the Zain Premier League championship group after the conclusion of the fifth round and the first section. Kuwait Club maintained its lead with 54 points, holding a three-point advantage over its closest rival, Al-Arabi, at 51 points. Al-Qadisiya slipped to third place with 49 points after securing a victory over Al-Nasr with two unanswered goals, maintaining its contention for the title despite the challenging task ahead as the competition nears its climax.

Although Kuwait Club nearly widened the gap to six points with a late goal against Al-Arabi, ultimately resulting in a draw, this outcome is seen as a positive step towards defending their title. With only five rounds remaining, the leading teams understand the importance of not dropping any points, as recovering from losses becomes increasingly difficult.

Al-Arabi’s determination to avoid defeat paid off as Sultan Al-Anzi’s late equalizer salvaged a draw, keeping their title hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Al-Qadisiya returned to winning ways with a narrow victory over Al-Nasr, reigniting its chances in the competition. However, it faces a tough road ahead and must win its remaining matches while also relying on slips from Kuwait Club and Al-Arabi to stay in contention.

Al-Qadisiya must maintain focus, especially with the upcoming Amir Cup final against Al-Salmiya looming on May 21. As for Al-Salmiya, its back-to-back victories propelled it to fourth place with 31 points, while Al-Fahaheel remained fifth with 27 points after a defeat against Al-Salmiya.
