Tottenham midfielder Aflie Devine set to join Plymouth on loan

Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine is set to join Plymouth Argyle on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year-old has spent the first half of the campaign on loan at League One side Port Vale before being recalled on Wednesday.

He is now expected to join Championship Plymouth until the summer, a move that will see him work under head coach Ian Foster once more, having previously played for him at England youth level.

Devine had been a regular feature for Port Vale this season making 26 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals before returning to his parent club.

He has also remained a regular for the England Under-20 side, starting all four of their matches during the September and October international breaks.

Devine becomes the second Tottenham player to join Plymouth on loan this January following 18-year-old defender Ashley Phillips’ move to the Championship club.

Foster was named head coach in January following the departure of Steven Schumacher to Stoke City, having previously held roles at Al Ettifaq and England’s under-18, under-19, and under-20 squads.

Plymouth lost midfielder Finn Azaz to Middlesbrough this month, after the 23-year-old was recalled by parent club Aston Villa before joining Michael Carrick’s side on a permanent deal. He had played a crucial role in Plymouth’s League One promotion last season, scoring eight goals in 34 league appearances, and had been similarly instrumental this term.

Plymouth sit 19th in the Championship and return to action on Saturday with the visit of Cardiff City.

Devine features in The Athletic’s My Football Journey series charting the progress of a group of young players from around the globe ahead of the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
