Town of Cambridge to bring back popular street festival to mark 30th anniversary

The Town of Cambridge is ready to party like it’s 1994 with a once-popular street festival returning to mark its 30th anniversary — albeit a year late.

The official anniversary date for the local authority came and went on March 1 but a celebratory festival won’t be held until mid-March next year.

Town staff pushed for the lengthy wait because of time and organisation concerns.

The festival is expected to cost $132,000 and include stage acts, children’s amusement rides, food vendors and market stalls through the Wembley town centre.

Cambridge held street festivals from 2015 to 2019 but the event fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and has not run since.

Councillors didn’t speak about the festival when they approved it on Tuesday, but at a meeting earlier this year deputy mayor Ben Mayes said it was important the local authority capitalised on its anniversary and could take a leaf from the City of Joondalup’s recent 25th anniversary celebrations.

“I think it is important that we look into potentially resurrecting this event, particularly given it is 30 years of the town,” he said.

“The street festival was hugely successful when it was being run. It had been run for just under five years and obviously it brings Cambridge Street alive.”
