An Australian man has been charged with drug offences in Bali after police allegedly found him in possession of methamphetamines.
Troy Smith, and his wife, were arrested in Canggu, on the south coast of the Indonesian island on May 2, according to reports by 7NEWS.
The Port Lincoln couple were interrogated by officers at police headquarters in Denpasar before Smith was charged with drug possession.
Local police allegedly found Smith with 3.5g of the illicit drug methamphetamine.
Smith’s lawyer told 7NEWS he would argue Smith is suffering from a drug addiction and will request he be sent to a rehabilitation facility rather than be imprisoned.
Smith has been remanded in custody and will remain behind bars, while his wife has been released without charge.
Like in many countries, Indonesia has capital punishment for the trafficking of illegal drugs. Drug possession is punishable by four to 12 years of imprisonment.
