Tucker Carlson earned big applause when he made an appearance at Joe Rogan’s Austin, Texas comedy that was a surprise to apparently even Carlson.

In an episode of comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s Kill Tony podcast, released on Monday, Carlson is introduced to the stage along with Rogan. The episode was filmed at Rogan’s Comedy Mothership.

“Tucker had no idea this was going on until 30 seconds ago,” Rogan said after he and Carlson earned a loud welcome and joined Hinchcliffe and comedians Jim Norton and Brian Redban on the stage. “He had no idea he was coming out on stage. He’s just finding out right now.”

“We were literally at dinner and he’s like, I want to show you my new place,” Carlson told the crowd, “and we’re standing backstage and I didn’t know I was coming out until I heard my name.”

A number of comedians were featured on the podcast. Each got 60 seconds to perform onstage and then they’d answer questions from the panel of judges. Some had fun with Carlson’s presence.

Hinchcliffe asked Carlson what he thought of comedian Enrique Chacon and the former Fox News host said he loved him.

“Thank you, Tucker. Maybe in return you could get me a green card,” Chacon said to laughter. “I’ll do any gig in this country, but outside the country I have to hit up my man Tucker, you know what I mean?”

“You’re already taking jobs Americans can’t do,” Carlson joked.

“I was going to vote for you, but you know what? You lost a good one here, but actually I can’t vote,” a laughing Chacon said.

“I meant it as a compliment!” Carlson responded.

At another point, comedian Kam Patterson told Carlson his grandmother “hates” him. A laughing Carlson responded, “She doesn’t mean it!”

“Yeah, the fuck she does!” Patterson said, cracking up Carlson and Rogan even further.

Rogan previously described Carlson as “very odd,” but a “nice guy” who is a “lightning rod for hate.” In a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he described hanging out with Carlson and taking him to Comedy Mothership (the Kill Tony episode was actually taped in March).

“We all want to classify people as on our tribe or not on our tribe,” he said. “Are we in or are we out? It’s ideological.”

Carlson referred to himself as an “unemployed talk show host” while at Rogan’s club. He used the same description when he spoke recently at a Kid Rock concert.
