Unusual hotel in Edinburgh’s vibrant Leith named one of the best in the world

A LUXURY hotel inside a BOAT has been named one of the best in the world.

Tripadvisor today announced its 2024 Travellers‘ Choice Hotel awards with winners across the globe.

And Fingal in Edinburgh was crowned in a number of categories as a must-stay place, including being named the best small and boutique hotel in the UK. It also took second place in Europe and 11th place in the world in the same category.

The former Northern Lighthouse Board ship turned floating hotel – which also secured itself top spot in the best UK Luxury list – is permanently berthed on Edinburgh’s vibrant Leith waterfront.

The five star establishment boasts all the glamour and style of a superyacht but with an old-world elegance.

There’s a two AA Rosette eatery, The Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar, meanwhile the whole place can be hired out for weddings and events.

Dan Mitchell, Vice President & General Manager Hotels for Tripadvisor, said: “Our Best of the Best Hotels are marvels, acclaimed by thousands of travellers for their remarkable service, stunning design, and wealth of amenities that redefine what it means to have an exceptional hotel experience.

“According to our Tripadvisor reviewers, each of the world’s best hotels caters to the traveller looking for accessible luxury and unique, tailored experiences.”

Seven other Scottish hotels were recognised in the awards.

An impressive five were among the top 25 best Small and Boutique hotels in the UK, with No.26 By The Sea, in Oban, which came in at number six. As the name would suggest it’s set right on the shorefront esplanade with stunning views and luxury rooms.

Meanwhile, Tigh na Sgiath Country House Hotel, in the Highlands near Aviemore, is number 14. The magnificent property was once the home of the Lipton Tea family and is set in fabulous grounds in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park.

Cringletie House in the Borders made number 15 while Perth & Kinross also had two winners in the category.  Lands of Loyal Hotel, in Blairgowrie was named number 21 and new entry, Knockendarroch Hotel, in Pitlochry was just behind at number 23. 

Another Pitlochry stay was honoured in the UK’s best B&Bs and Inns category.  

Craigmhor Lodge & Courtyard, which came in at number eight, is tucked away in woodland grounds with a selection of luxury rooms and suites.

Finally, Glencoe House in the Highlands was awarded 13th best Luxury Hotel in the UK. 

This historic mansion, the former home of Lord Strathcona, has views over the stunning Pap of Glencoe.
