A few years ago, Danielle Laidley was in Geelong spending time with an old friend, former North Melbourne player Anthony Stevens.
Laidley and Stevens had played together on the 1996 Kangaroos premiership side. They had been friends for close to 20 years, and yet it was only recently that Laidley had shown her true self to Stevens. After a lifetime of struggling, she was living as her authentic self: a transgender woman.
