WA prisons crisis: Jail suicide prevention unit only partly reinstated after 2017 disbandment

A special suicide prevention unit within the Department of Justice that was disbanded shortly after Labor swept to power in 2017 has still only been reinstated in an “interim capacity” despite a coroner saying 12 months ago it should be reformed “immediately”.

Coroner Michael Jenkin said in his November 2022 findings from an inquest into the hanging suicide of 42-year-old Wayne Thomas Larder at Hakea Prison that it was “astonishing” what was then known as the Clinical Governance Unit had been abolished with the 2017 “machinery of government” changes.
