Woolworths responds to claims it’s charging more for ripe avocados

A Woolworths customer has sparked debate after claiming that the supermarket giant is charging more for ripe avocados.

In a new video, the mum-of-five said she was confused to note that ready-to-eat avocados are 30 cents more expensive than less ripe varieties.

Footage shown by the shopper on social media shows that Hass avocados that are “ripe in two to four days” are priced at $1.20 each on the Woolworths website – while Hass avocados that can be eaten in “one to two days” cost $1.50 each.

“What do you mean, it’s 30 cents more for the same type of avocado that’s ripe sooner?” the shopper, who uses the handle @justanotherbusymum, said. “What? What!?”

She later added: “Well this is a bit of a joke.”

A few days later, another Woolworths shopper noted that they too had spotted the controversial avocado pricing at their local store.

“So apparently, apparently, with your avocados now, if you want a hard one, it’s $1.30,” the social media user, who uses the handle @jarrodsworld, said.

“But if you want one you can eat now, it’s $1.50. I saw someone else post about this as well.”

He added: “Are you cheeky buggers charging more for something you can eat now, rather than a couple of days? If not, does that mean it could apply to green bananas? I don’t know.”

Woolworths responds

However a Woolworths spokesperson has been quick to tell 7NEWS.com.au that the pricing was due to an online and ticketing glitch – and is not a permanent pricing strategy.

“Due to a ticketing error, some of our stores display two different prices for our Eat Now, Eat Later avocados,” the spokesperson said.

“Customers can rest assured the correct price will be charged at the checkout.

“We’re working with our teams to resolve this and apologise for any inconvenience.”

7NEWS.com.au understands that the glitch lead to some stores printing the incorrect price on large format tickets, and customers were not charged the incorrect price.

Correct avocado prices for this week at Woolworths are: $1.30ea in NSW and VIC; $1.20ea in Qld, SA/NT and TAS and $1.00ea in WA.
