Amid appraisal season, Bengaluru company gives a spin to Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour work week suggestion

Last year, Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy sparked a debate by suggesting that India’s youth should work 70 hours a week to boost productivity. This idea received mixed reactions. Wakefit, a Bengaluru furniture startup, offered a unique perspective by advocating for rest and relaxation. The company proposed that people should aim to sleep for 70 hours every week instead. Co-founder Chaitanya Ramalingegowda also shared a video on LinkedIn emphasizing the importance of rest for consistent performance.

“We at Wakefit have been following this debate for a while now. With the start of a new financial year and appraisal season in top gear, today seems to be a good time to share our views. Yes, we sincerely believe we should all put in 70 hours every week for maximum productivity. A growing economy like ours needs the 70 hour contribution from every team member year after year. Honestly, it is not asking for much,” Ramalingegowda said, suggesting that people should sleep for 70 hours per week to ensure they are well-rested and able to perform at their best. Many liked the video, which at the end speaks about the benefit of using Wakefit mattress. An user commented: “I think the biggest differentiation i have seen in your product ads is that you are selling sleep instead of your product and that makes the difference. Keeping it simple.”

The 70-hour work week debate

Last year, NR Narayana Murthy, a co-founder of Infosys, stirred debate by advising Indian youth to commit to 70-hour work weeks for the sake of the nation’s economic growth. This counsel garnered diverse reactions, with some deeming it excessive and others endorsing it. Murthy has recently defended his stance, asserting that he would humbly acknowledge any individual who has achieved greater success than him and seek guidance on where he might have erred in making such a recommendation. He emphasized that he wouldn’t advocate such dedication without having personally adhered to it, noting the relentless efforts of less privileged individuals striving to make ends meet.

Drawing parallels between intensive work schedules and the toil of impoverished farmers and factory laborers, Murthy underscored the obligation of those who’ve benefited from subsidized education to exert themselves diligently. Reflecting on his own routine, he disclosed his past practice of starting work at 6:20 am and leaving at 8:30 pm, six days per week, occasionally logging 85-90 hours during six-day work weeks until 1994.
