Car crashes into Ballina Coles, two people hospitalised

Two people have been taken to hospital after a car ploughed through a Coles in NSW’s Northern Rivers region.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson confirmed the incident occurred at about 12.30pm on Tuesday at the Coles supermarket on Fox St in Ballina.

Police say the Toyota Corolla also allegedly struck a woman inside the supermarket.

Four people were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The woman who was allegedly hit is aged in her 30s and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, a woman in her 70s, was also taken to hospital for shock and minor injuries.

NSW Ambulance also said one of the women taken to hospital suffered a head injury.

A male passenger inside the car was not injured.

Photos posted to social media show the car did considerable damage to the inside of the supermarket, including near the self-serve section.

Coles could not comment on the incident, however, confirmed the Ballina store was closed until further notice.

“The safety of our customers and team members is always our highest priority,” a spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with our customers who were involved in today’s events and we are working closely with emergency services who are investigating the incident.

“We extend our appreciation to emergency services for their response and ensuring our customers received prompt medical attention and care. We are providing counselling and support to our team members who witnessed the incident.”
