Penn Relays, 2024: Morris Hills’ Sathiyan secures fifth place in pole vault

PHILADELPHIA—Morris Hills junior Shreya Sathiyan was N.J.’s top pole vault finisher this year’s Penn Relays securing her first-ever medal at Penn Relays.

In a highly competitive meet on Thursday, Sathiyan cleared 11-9 to finish in fifth place and walk away with a bronze medal. Sathiyan was tied with six other competitors who cleared 11-9, but Sathiyan beat them out by clearing 11-3 and 11-9 without any misses.

Thursday’s performance marks another strong meet for the star pole vaulter, who has been off to a great start to the 2024 season. After opening the season with a clearance of 11-6, Sathiyan cleared 12-3 at the Morris Hills Relays this past weekend to secure first place.

Haddonfield’s Rebecca Hoover posted N.J.’s second-best performance, clearing 11-9 on her second attempt, placing eighth. Hillsborough’s Ella Karolewski managed to surpass 11-9 on her third attempt for 10th place, while Moorestown’s Hannah Byrd-Leitner posted a mark of 11-3.
