The pilot, Dean Lovis-Hotchin, 47, was the only person on board.

He was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

7NEWS understands he underwent emergency surgery on Thursday morning.

The father is highly respected in the farming industry.

Locals in the nearby town of Broken Hill greeted the news that Lovis-Hotchin was found alive.

“If it wasn’t for the emergency services we have out here in the bush, he could have still been wandering out there hurt,” Broken Hill local woman Karen Page said.

Recreational Aviation Australia, the peak body responsible for administering ultralight, recreational and light sport aircraft, has been notified about the crash.

An investigation is underway into what went wrong.

“These aircraft are normally considered highly reliable. I haven’t seen many reports or accident reports on these things, but you never know what the cause was,” aviation expert Peter Marosszeky said.
