This Grinning Hybrid Lamborghini Urus Prototype Isn’t Plotting Anything Sinister, We Promise

This big boy is likely the Lamborghini ’s new plug-in hybrid variant of its extremely popular Urus crossover. Sure, it’s hidden under a few layers of grim, gray billowy nightgown and seems to have a sardonic grin, but all the better to hide the newly-redesigned headlights.

Lamborghini had a record sales year in 2023, helped largely by the brand’s Urus SUV, which accounted for over 60 percent of those units. Right now you can order a standard Urus S or the 657-horsepower Urus Performante. The Urus rides on the same platform as Porsche’s Cayenne, and by comparison Porsche sells five variants of its newly-refreshed SUV, and three of them are hybrid. All Lamborghini is really missing is a plug-in variant of the Urus for the increasing number of buyers living in cities with congestion charges for non-battery-powered cars.

I’ve NEVER seen anything like this.

Thanks to the visionary Lamborghini spy video work of Varryx on YouTube, as well as Motor1‘s post about it, the world now has an opportunity to see the hi-po hybrid Italian machine in at least some of its glory. This Lambo truck is wrapped up in an extensive set of camouflage to hide some aspects of the design, but the parts that are showing seem to be in production-ready trim. Considering the video shows a handful of different camo’d Urus, it seems likely that the SUV is mere months away from a visual refresh inside and out, and the launch of some additional hybridized models. The Urus was introduced six years ago, so it’s about time for a bit of a nip here and a tuck there. Or at least some Botox.

Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid out-muscles the Urus Performante by a whopping 72 horsepower, so the Italians are going to have to up the ante a bit with their own hybrid model. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sant’Agata folks push power up to an even 750 for bragging rights.

In 2021 Lamborghini announced that it wanted to have all of its models electrified by the time 2025 rolled around. Once the Urus has a hybrid, that’ll just leave the replacement for the V10-only Huracan to come. The brand’s halo Revuelto is already a plug-in hybrid hypercar, and the coming Lanzador is a full battery-electric model.
